Humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences (GSK)

Humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences (GSK) show us where we come from and help us to understand more fully the direction in which we are headed. As a whole, these disciplines generate comprehensive knowledge about us as individuals and as a society. Together with other disciplines, they research and work on the scientific foundations for solving the major societal challenges of our times, such as climate change, scarcity of resources, health, digitalisation, preservation of our cultural heritage and demographic change.

Humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences at the BMFWF

The Federal Ministry of Womens' Affairs, Science and Research (BMFWF) is in charge of strategically controlling, coordinating and negotiating the framework conditions for the development of science and research in these fields at universities and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) (through performance agreements) and at several non-university institutions as well as by means of the RTI Strategy. The BMFWF represents Austria in national and international bodies, such as in European research infrastructures and the EU Framework Programmes for Research.

Strategic further development of the humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences

In late 2017, a process on the strategic further development of the framework conditions for the humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences resulted in the publication of a strategy document (GSK Strategy) containing 41 measures divided into five thematic areas. In dialogue with the GSK community and relevant funding agencies, the BMFWF developed concrete measures that are to be implemented by 2021.
