North- and South America

The USA is one of the most innovative countries globally. Therefore, a strong network of relationships exists between higher education institutions, universities, and research institutions in Austria and the USA. Specific programs to expand bilateral cooperation and mobility complement these efforts. Examples include the Fulbright Program, the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation Program, and the Open Medical Institute in Salzburg.

ASciNA-Awards

Since 2008, theFederal Ministry of Women, Science and Research (BMFWF) supports the network of Austrian Scientists and Scholars in North America (ASciNA) in general and in particular through the ASciNA-Awards. The BMFWF honors young researchers with a connection to Austria by awarding them for excellent publications written while they were at an institution in North America. The awards consist of prizes in two categories: one Junior Principal Investigator Award (€ 10,000) and two Young Scientist Awards (each €7,500).

Brazil

To further enhance cooperation in science and research with key global partners, the governments of Austria and Brazil signed a bilateral Scientific and Technological Cooperation (S&T Cooperation) agreement in 2019. Based on this agreement, the BMFWF and the Brazilian Ministry of Science (MCTI) developed a cooperation program to foster bilateral research collaboration.

EU-Latin America and Caribbean (EU-LAC)

The BMFWF is participating in EU-Latin America and Caribbean Interest Group (EU-LAC) initiative to jointly promote multinational research projects funded by agencies from European and Latin American/Caribbean countries. The funding for travel, accommodation, and material costs enables Austrian researchers to participate in multilateral research projects throughout the entire Latin American region
